Activity: B10
Leader: John Vandenberg
Cost: $16.00
Time: 2:30pm-5:30pm May 31

While their tiny size creates the illusion of mystery, mosses are recognized using features similar to those used to identify wildflowers and trees. At the same time, mosses can do all kinds of tricks that other plants can’t. Take a second look at the jungle underfoot, using hand-lenses and the naked eye to become familiar with some of the parts that make up a moss and to discover what differentiates one moss from its neighbour. Many species are incredibly consistent in terms of the substrates they inhabit, patterns that are readily turned to the moss-seeker’s advantage. Learn to recognize some common species – and be on the look-out for the globally rare alvar denizen, Cain’s Twisted Moss (Syntrichia cainii). Bring a field guide and hand lens if possible. Children over 10 welcome. Maximum 20 participants, minimum 4. Moderate effort.
